JACKSONVILLE, Fla. -- Jacksonville's youngest murder suspect pleaded guilty in the death of his little brother.

Cristian Fernandez, 14, pleaded guilty today to manslaughter as a juvenile and aggravated battery as an adult.

He was arrested as a 12-year-old in 2011 and charged as an adult in the case.

Authorities say Cristian beat his 2-year-old brother David so bad that he lost consciousness. David suffered head trauma and died two days after being hospitalized.

"Today, I believe justice was served for this precious young man," said State Attorney Angela Corey.

As part of his plea deal, Cristian will be held behind bars until his 19th birthday. One of the stipulations of the deal was for Cristian to serve the entire sentence.

"This disposition will allow him to learn from the crime he committed," added Corey.

The teenager will be placed on eight years of probation after his release.  If he violates probation, Corey says he will be sentenced to 15 years in adult prison.

"The sentence fits the crime based on the unique circumstance of the killer being 12 years old," said Corey.

He will be required to undergo therapy. Both sides are hoping he gets the help he needs. Dr. Lynn Wadelton is a clinical psychologist. "That's going to be very difficult," said Wadelton.

She says the answer to that will depend largely on Cristian. "He's a child with anger who was hurt and acting out on animals and children for many years. It's whether he can find an outlet for that and heal," said Wadelton.

While the Department of Juvenile Justice provides behavioral and mental health services, Wadelton says Cristian will need a lot of therapy. She just hopes the state system can handle his needs. "That's the biggest thing, will he develop empathy," said Wadelton.

Republicans??? The DEMOCRAT LIBERALS are the party of no self discipline. The DEMOCRATS are the ones who rush to benefit from the low information and low moral voters of this country. They are the ones that believe in free sex and abortion no matter what and the ill conceived children associated with this case will grow up dependent on society just like the Democrats want them to be! Republicans - I don't think so!

All the adults in this childs life failed him. To correct somethings. He was 12 when this happened, not 14. His mother was a child having a child and I'm sure he had to take care of his younger sibling. His bio father should have been arrested for impregnating a child. Where was DCF? Do you honestly think that this child wanted this kind of life? And the horrible things I've read from some of the adults who wrote their opinion, should be ashamed of themselves. Children don't stand a chance in Florida. This has got nothing to do with being liberal. It's got everything to do with caring for our children and protecting them, they are a gift from God. Today it looks as though there is war on our children. Without them we seize to exist. What happen to compassion?

This child was abused, no doubt… His mother was abused, no doubt. That does not excuse what happened to the younger brother, but, It does tell me that this child needs a mental health evaluation, and help! What he does not need, and what will NOT help him, is a sentence to a jail or prison! This child can be and should be given a chance to be 'rehabilitated'. We as a society owe this cild no less!!!!

This kid started out as a baby to a 12 year girl. His bio father is a registered sex offender. No one protected his mother when she was a little girl. She gave birth, kept the child, went on to have other children. It is not surprise that this happened. My heart goes out to this boy. His actions were that of a kid. He surely did not set out to kill his little brother. I hope he completes his education and when released goes on to contribute to society in a positive way.

What do the Republicans have to do with what the kid did to his brother? If anything, like you said, look deeper into the problem within the home. But clearly at 14 yrs old, a person has the capacity to know right from wrong. He's clearly a mental case and if we're injecting politics into this, blame the Democrats and their Utopian visions.
