MARIETTA, Ga. -- A jury has convicted De'Marquise Elkins guilty in the murder of 13-month-old Antonio Santiago.

[Read: Grand jury indictment against Elkins]

Elkins, 18, now faces life in prison for shooting and killing a Brunswick baby while trying to rob the baby's mother. Elkins' mother, Karimah, is charged with hiding the suspected murder weapon. She faces 15 years in prison.

The jury convicted Elkins on these counts:

  • Count 1: Malice murder

  • Count 2: Felony murder

  • Count 3:Felony murder

  • Count 4: Aggravated assault

  • Count 5: Criminal attempt to commit armed robbery

  • Count 6: Aggravated assault

  • Count 7: Aggravated assault

  • Count 8: Cruelty to children

  • Count 9: Possession of a firearm during commission of a felony

  • Count 14: Criminal attempt to commit armed robbery

  • Count 15: Aggravated assault

The jurors took the case before breaking for lunch at 1 p.m. The panel returned around 2 p.m. with a question for the judge.  The defense attorney requested a motion for a mistrial due to claims of misconduct by a juror.  The defense said an employer called a juror to say they had been fired from their job while on jury duty.  The attorney said both are criminal acts.  The judge denied the motion.

For the past two weeks, the mother and son have sat at the same table, never speaking to each other, listening to attorneys and witnesses describe how they may or may not have been involved in one of the most brutal murders our area has ever seen, the murder of a 13-month-old Antonio Santiago.

Karimah Elkins was convicted of tampering with evidence.  The jury acquitted her on the charge of making a false statement.

The state asked the jury for a conviction. While the defense asked them to consider other possible suspects.
