LAKE CITY, Fla. -- A Lake City neighborhood is still in shock after a Thursday morning fire killed a police officer.

The Columbia County Sheriff's Office says a fire engulfed a home on Dante Terrace just before 1 a.m.The home belonged to Lake City police investigator David Greear. Greear is a 14-year veteran of the force.

Deputies say Greear was able to escape from the flames with minor injuries, but another officer inside the home was not as lucky.

Lake City police officer Brandi Jackson died inside the home. Jackson was only on the force for two months.
Neighbors who live off of Dante Terrace say they never knew Greear, but knew he lived down the block because of his patrol car.

"I saw his car in the driveway a couple of times," said neighbor Amanda Whalen.

Whalen says it may take some time for this community to get over all the commotion that woke their quiet neighborhood Thursday.

"We don't see anything happen around here so it was weird coming home and seeing all this action going on," said Whalen.

Action News asked officers if the two officers involved had a romantic relationship, but we were told they could not release any information. Neighbors couldn't answer that question either.

Needs a full investigation to settle this! Very suspicious.

Look at the owner seems suspect. A fire breaks out at 1am and this bog guy gets out why the new officer dies. It seems like he could have done more. I smell foul play.

This story is vague and confusing. How did he get out with minor injuries and she was killed? The story also states she is a mother, then where are the children? The house was fully engulfed when firefighters arrived? Was it a portable heater? It's warm enough at night to run the a/c. There is a lot missing in this story. RIP young lady.
