ST. AUGUSTINE, Fla.-- St. John's County Sheriff's sheriff's deputies shot and killed a man at a St. Augustine home Wednesday after they went to check out reports of a gunman threatening his family.
"In this case, this individual was arming himself against the deputies," said Cmdr. Chuck Mulligan of the St. Johns County Sheriff's Office.
Police say people were being threatened by Rodney Stevens, 64, after his family called police to turn him in for outstanding warrants.
"He did have a long gun," said Angie Kennerly, Stevens' daughter, who called 911.
Believing the lives of sheriff's officers and people inside were in danger, deputies entered the house on Katnack Road just east of Dixie Highway near the St. Augustine Airport with guns drawn.
Sheriff's officials say deputies fired at Stevens during a confrontation and killed him. Stevens had outstanding warrants for grand theft auto, felony battery and witness tampering.
