ST. AUGUSTINE, Fla. -- A Jacksonville man was killed Thursday morning after, neighbors say, he tried to help his stranded stepdaughter on Interstate 95 just north of International Golf Parkway.
According to the Florida Highway Patrol, 61-year-old Patricia Ann Harris became stranded in the northbound lanes of I-95 and called 82-year-old Charles Burnice Sherrill, for help.
FHP said Sherrill parked in the southbound median and tried to cross the northbound lanes to get to her. That's when Sherrill was struck and run over by multiple vehicles, the FHP said.
The news sent shockwaves through his neighborhood. Neighbor Marsha Wacker said everyone knew Sherrill a Navy veteran who served 25 years in the military, as "Pop Pete."
"Just a real sweet man who would do anything in the world for you. I still can't believe it," said Wacker.
Investigators said Sherrill was wearing dark-colored clothing at the time of the incident.
The FHP said blood alcohol test results and charges are pending against 45-year-old Roger Dominguez, who hit Sherrill.
According to the FHP, Dominguez did pull over after the incident.
"He saw the item in the roadway that was being struck by several additional vehicles and quickly realized that it was a human body. At that point he immediately called 911 and remained on scene and has been cooperative with our investigators," said Sgt. Dylan Bryan.
Bryan said investigators have already made contact with other drivers involved in the crash.
The FHP asks if you have any information regarding the crash to call (904) 301-3700.
