JACKSONVILLE, Fla. -- Merrill Road in Arlington is back open after, JSO reports, a speeding driver fell asleep at the wheel and struck a power pole.

The crash happened around 3:30 Friday morning along the 6200 block of Merrill Road near Cesery Boulevard. The closure extended from Ector Road to Red Oak.

Officers at the scene report the driver, a 25-year-old man, had just flown into town to visit his girlfriend at Jacksonville University. He told police he was driving fast because he was "excited." Speeding is a secondary offense and since no one spotted him speeding, he will not be ticketed.

JEA power crews responded to fix the power pole.

The driver is said to have hurt his ankle, but otherwise is okay and refused any medical treatment.
