JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – Action News has just learned Public Defender, Matt Shirk, who is under investigation for wrongdoing, has hired a personal attorney.
The public defender’s office reports Gene Nichols will represent Shirk. Action News was the first to begin investigating Shirk back in July.
According to Nichols’ website, he is a Jacksonville native and went to Nova Southeastern University. For the past six years, he has focused on DUI and substance abuse cases. And he began his legal career in the public defender's office under the supervision of Lou Frost.
Shirk is under investigation for the questionable hirings and firings of three women in his office; two recently hired from the Whisky River Bar and Restaurant.
Shirk is also accused of allowing consumption of alcohol in his office. He has since admitted to that behavior. A check of city code shows that is a violation.
