JACKSONVILLE, Fla. -- After hours of waiting for a man police thought was barricaded in a home, the standoff has now turned into a search for a fugitive.

SWAT units were called to the 11000 block of Beckley Place around 5 p.m., Sunday. Officers believed a man had locked himself inside a house. Action News has learned there were people in the home, but those people have been allowed to leave.

Police were not sure if the man had weapons so they shutdown the area and told residents to stay inside. Several attempts to make contact with the unidentified individual failed. Around 11 p.m., officers discovered the man was not inside of the home. Investigators did not release a description of the man but believe he is only a danger to himself.

If I lock myself in the house should I expect a SWAT team and 20 squad cars to show up and hang around until I come out? Wouldn't you think this a waste of resources and money. There is no indication he was going to hurt anyone but possibly himself. If he had been there and didn't come out, I'm sure the SWAT team would have put a hurt on him anyway. In this case it's pretty obvious the man was not locked up in his house in the first place.

I live in this neighborhood and the news did a horrible job. We know basically nothing. He is home, he isn't home. He is a danger, he isn't a danger. Thanks for keeping us up to date guys. I think the guy in that house's last name might be Hill- if it is- he is a nut, but harmless. Also, the response by law enforcement was immediate. It happened so quickly and before you know it- there had to be at least 20 squad cars and a command center set up to get things under control. I have the same fears as the previous comment regarding "police state" but I am glad these brave men and women showed up when they did and took charge with the goal of keeping people safe.

Not nearly enough information in this story. It's dangerous enough that SWAT shows up ready to kill someone. Then we are told he's not a danger to anyone. What was going on that caused this to happen. What was the intial 911 call for ? Was he trying to commit suicide by police? If so why would this person be a fugitive now? If news is going report on something like this try to get a full story not just "the offical" line you get fed by police. Not everything the government does is honest and above board. I thought news agencies try to get both sides of the story to get the "truth". Got wonder if our country was turning into "police state" if the news now days would report on such things.
