JACKSONVILLE, Fla. -- The Duval County Health Department says the tuberculosis probe at Andrew Jackson began when a student with symptoms went to the hospital last Saturday.

A positive test for tuberculosis came back on Tuesday, which is when health experts confirmed a second case.

The health department drafted letters to send home to about 100 parents of students who were in contact with the students with TB.

Six teachers and staff members are also being tested for TB. Doctors are also doing blood tests at school through next week. The results from those tests should be back late next week.

The health department says there's no reason to believe the cases at the high school are tied to an outbreak of TB among Jacksonville's homeless population last year.

Health experts say it is safe for parents to send their children to school.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, TB is spread through the air from one person to another.

The TB bacteria are put into the air when a person with TB disease of the lungs or throat coughs, sneezes, speaks, or sings. People nearby may breathe in these bacteria and become infected.

TB is not spread by shaking someone's hand, sharing food or drink, touching sheets or toilet seats, sharing toothbrushes or kissing.
