Arrest for bogus tow truck scam
CLAY COUNTY, Fla. -- Police in Clay County have arrested the man they believe is responsible for a bogus tow truck scam.
Detectives arrested Robert Hyers for a recent series of schemes to defraud. He's accused of calling his victims on the phone claiming to be a tow truck driver. He would claim he was towing a vehicle for the business next door to the incident location. He would ask for $85 to cover the bill, saying that the business would give the money back later. It was a scam.
The suspect was picked out of a photo lineup. Police say there are also similar cases he may be connected to in Duval, St. Johns and Nassau Counties.
