JACKSONVILLE, Fla. -- The new Duval County Courthouse has failed its most recent inspection.

Saturday, fire and safety officials conducted a check of the facility but at least half of the systems did not work. Workers will attempt to fix the problems and another inspection will begin at 4 a.m., Sunday.

The City of Jacksonville says it will not comment on how the failure will affect the upcoming court schedule.

As a professional Realtor for many years, I helped scores of people move into new homes. In all that time, I never moved anyone into a home before all necessary inspections and paperwork was complete. I never had anyone become homeless because they had moved out of their old home before the new one was ready. So, why is it that our courthouse employees find themselves without a home? They have all of the resources of the City of Jacksonville at their disposal. They have the best and brightest working for them. Certainly people involved in coordinating the courthouse move have moved their private residence during the course of their lives. Did they move before their new home was ready? This entire fiasco is beyond comprehension. Where is common sense among our courthouse employees. Interesting that in one's personal affairs this would be unacceptable, but in government affairs this is par for the course. Why does it happen? Because those involved in the decision-making process are not spending their own money. They have no stake in the outcome. The bureaucrats have safe and secure jobs that are largely unaffected by the failing economy around them. They are confident that no matter what happens in the real world, they will be able to collect their above market wages and cushy pensions in the future. This is why less government is always the best government. Government bureaucrats will grab as much as they can for themselves, squander resources indiscriminately, and make bad financial decisions every time. As JustJoan so eloquently noted, why did we even NEED a new courthouse? It's an architectural masterpiece to be sure, but was it necessary? What's going to happen to the old courthouse? Must be nice to be able to get a brand new building and have someone else pick up the tab for it.... Government bureaucrat mentality hard at work... Did anyone even ask the taxpayers if they wanted the new court?
