There seems to be more to this story. A sailboat doesn't need an engine to get from point a to point b. Where were their charts, compass? What is the real story? How long have they been sailors? How long have they owned that boat? Was there a medical condition rendering them unable to utilize their sails? That is the story I would like to see reported. The way you reported this story makes no sense to people. A sailboat adrift? C'mon! That's what sailboats do! No engine needed...

these old fools must have more money than good sense ??? how does a sailboat in the atlantic run adrift ??? they ain't in the horse latitudes !!! if the coast guard allows them to set sail,, then they should be held responsible for whatever outcome arises !!! has anyone questioned whether or not either of these 2 needs a baker act hearing ??? for the sake of the dog,, baker act these 2 lunatics !!! if they set sail with deficient sails,, then they should be prohibited from sailing,, as only an idiot would attempt a 90 mile journey across open Atlantic waters with a 10-15 horsepower engine !!!

Take the boat away from these two old codgers. According to the TU, they drifted for a few days, then beached their boat because they lost engine power and got disoriented. Gents, you're on a SAILBOAT. You don't need an engine to get somewhere. Disoriented?! Even if you didn't have a gyrocompass, the sun still rises in the east and sets in the west. You started out sailing east away from the continental U.S. After the engine died, sail westward until you bump into land.
