JACKSONVILLE, Fla. -- Law enforcement officers across the state will be on the look out for impaired drivers beginning Wednesday Dec. 12. It's all part of the "Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over" campaign which runs through January 1st.
The campaign will include sobriety check points and heavy enforcement presence on the roads.
According to the Florida Department of Transportation in 2011 there were 920 alcohol related fatalities resulting from car accidents. The holidays are an especially dangerous time of the year for drivers.
In December alone, about 30 percent of the nation's fatalities in traffic accidents involve alcohol-impaired drivers.
"We want everyone to enjoy their holidays, but we also want our roadways to be safe," said Colonel Brierton of the Florida Highway Patrol.
It is illegal to drive with a blood-alcohol content of 0.08 or higher. If you are caught driving under the influence of alcohol you can face jail time, lose your driver's license, face higher insurance rates, have to pay attorney and court fees, and could potentially lose your job.
