PALM COAST, Fla. -- Flames fueled by gasoline shot high into air for hours Tuesday. The heat was so intense it melted three inches of asphalt across all lanes of northbound I-95 near Palm Coast.

For thousands of drivers like John Montaldo, the traffic was a holiday nightmare as police directed detours through Flagler County.

“It was nice and easy up until Palm Coast and it’s like we hit a wall.”

It took 12 hours for emergency road crews to repair 120 feet of interstate, estimated to cost more than $100,000.

The Florida Highway Patrol is now investigating who's responsible.

Police say the driver of a fuel tanker, Christopher Mceuen of Jacksonville, was killed when he rear ended another tractor trailer, driven by St. Claire Agenord. Agenord survived, but was arrested on unrelated charges.

Action News found Mceuen was employed by Jacksonville based Florida Rock and Tank Lines, which has the same name as the company cited by OSHA for an explosion that took place at a St. Johns County BP gas station in 2011. Calls to the company went unreturned Tuesday evening.
