WELAKA, Fla. -- Three years after little Haleigh Cummings disappeared her family is staying hopeful.

"We believe she's out there," step great-grandmother Barbie Squires said.

The 5-year-old up and vanished in the middle of the night. Soon after, police and volunteers scoured the woods and river around her house, but no Haleigh.

Squires says they won't rest until they find out what happened.

"There's too many questions. The whys, the how's, the where?" she asked.

There are two theories surrounding Haleigh's disappearance. Some believe she was kidnapped by her mom's family and hidden away somewhere.

The other theory is that someone killed her that night in her dad's trailer and disposed of her body.

Private investigator Kerry Brown believes the latter.

"I'm pretty convinced Haleigh died in that trailer that night," he said.

Brown started working the case pro bono several months after she vanished. He says Misty Croslin, Haleigh's father's girlfriend, at the time, was the last person to see the girl that night.

Police have been tight-lipped, but they do believe she is she the missing key to this puzzle.

Squires believes that too and will continue pressing the issue until someone says something.

"We keep the vigil for the hope and to let her know if she's watching out there that we're here, we're fighting for her, we want her back," she said.

The family held a candlelight vigil for Haleigh tonight in Welaka. There were lots of tears and emotional pictures.   One picture showed Haleigh in the arms of her father, Ronald Cummings.  He's in prison on drug charges.  Action News has learned Ronald Cummings wrote a letter to the family's pastor.  It read he's in good spirits and he wished he could've been at the vigil.

Wow...what a fairy tale...wheres the proof? She got to you too it sounds like. Is it just too impossible for some to think a 'sweet young thang' just might be the devil in disguise? The amount of child murders at the hands of their 'mommy' has risen more than ever, or hasn't anybody else but me noticed that? I'm not saying she was the one who did it, I am pretty damn sure she knows who did. And her 'drug selling' code of ethics won't let her talk. If it can happen in the whole west side of Jax, that nobody will 'squeel', what makes you think she will too? Being raped as a child is no EXCUSE for selling drugs.I have a EX daughter in law that has said that about every male member of her family, and she is STILL a druggy. Misty is lying and will say anything to get out early.

For Kerry Brown, investigator, or for anyone who has not met Misty, to say she is the key or the perpetrator in the Haleigh case is preposterous. I have spent dozens of hour with Misty in the past year. I have seen her interacting with her 5 year old niece. she was wonderful with the child. There is no way she would have hurt Haleigh. She was asleep when Haleigh was abducted. Her brother waivered from his story after one year, but Misty has never changed her story. Meanwhile, the police failed to look at a store video tape shortly after a sighting in St Augustine. They dropped the ball and pronounced Haleigh dead 2 years ago. The police went after a young woman who's family had no money. They did a 30 day drug sting, on 2 occasions gave Misty money for percoset because they knew she had no money. 2 Judges sentenced her to 25 years on a first time offense after hearing that she was raped when she was a child. I'm going to get justice for Misty. The truth is going to come out. Meanwhile, Haleigh is being home schooled by someone who probably is not qualified.
