FOXBOROUGH, Mass. (AP) - Blaine Gabbert had an inconsistent NFL debut and his Jacksonville Jaguars teammates didn't do any better as the New England Patriots won 47-12 in an exhibition opener on Thursday night.

Playing against mostly backups as top players for both teams sat out the game, the Jaguars scored three field goals on Gabbert's six possessions. The 10th pick of the draft from Missouri completed 9 of 16 passes for 85 yards. He played the entire first half with starting quarterback David Garrard unavailable with a back injury.

Another rookie quarterback, third-rounder Ryan Mallett of the Patriots, did better.

The former Arkansas standout played the whole second half and drove the Patriots to touchdowns on his first four series, helping to turn a 19-9 halftime lead into a 35-point rout.

they act like the two dropped balls would have made a difference, not.we wasted another first round pick on another QB we could have gotten in the third round.pats got one in the seventh and he looked better.we should have went after a wide receiver who can open the field.every first rounder picked in the draft and given millions more than proven vets should start day one.all except QB's and the pats know this ie;tom brady.that linebacker we picked up is going to make gene smith look stupid, buffalo's glad we took him.8-8 folks

The Jags looked like a Division II college team playing an NFL team!!! GEE Gene, I wonder WHY that is????? My observations from last nights game? We have a future star in Blaine Gabbert. But, we could have had Mallet in round Two or three, and he TOO is going to be a star. If not for "clean Gene"!! We NEEDED that other pick!!! Not that "clean Gene" wouldn't have wasted it anyway! The Pats 2's and 3's look better than our 1's!!! WHY, were we kicking field goals???? Does Scobee REALLY need that practice??? Paul Posluszny had his lunch ate by the Pats TE!! We AGAIN paid STAR money to an average at best free agent!!! We could have gotten a star in free agency, but, NO, let's pay an average player STAR money!!! The Jags say they are happy with their WR's! Well, I'd say they are the ONLY ones!!!! EVERY PLAYER that played in the second half should be CUT TODAY!!!! Our defense is STILL PATHETIC!!!! Our coach is a certifiable IDIOT!!! Our GM is a certifiable IDIOT!! Looking forward to a great year guy's!! NOT!!! I know, all you "SHEEPLE" will say, it's ONLY pre-season!!! Well, that doesn't cut it!!! There is NO WAY to sugar coat that game!!!! Pre-season or not, the Jags embarrassed themselves and the city of Jacksonville!!!! All the Jags have is a BIG BAG FULL OF EXCUSES, and a TERRIBLE football team!!!! I call it like I see it!!!! I know that's not popular in today's society, but it used to be perfectly acceptable to be honest!!!
