JACKSONVILLE, Fla. -- Florida Governor Rick Scott wants President Obama to intervene to stop thousands of longshoremen from walking off the job at the end of month.

Scott sent a letter to the President Obama on Thursday outlining the possible economic damage a strike could cost the state.

Thousands of Longshoremen, including workers at JAXPORT, have until December 29th to come up with a new contract.

According to the governor's office 550,000 jobs are either directly or indirectly are affected by Florida's cargo activity.

Nancy Rubin, spokesperson for JAXPORT, tells Action News that they do have a significant containerized cargo business that is handled by the International Longshoreman's Association and would be affected by the potential strike. It is up to the private companies that use the port to work out a new contract with the labor union since JAXPORT is not the longshoremen's employer.

"Our role in a strike situation would be to monitor the situation and keep our unaffected businesses running safely and efficiently," Rubin says.

A government of business, by business, and for business. According to US census data from 1980 to 2008 the average income of Americans increased only $303 yet the cost of living more than doubled. According to South Florida Business Journal, "The average annual salary for Floridians ranks No. 32 nationwide" at $40,750. That's just above low-income. Chancellor Scott cares nothing for the proletariats of this great state and come election time the people's view need be equally reflective of all elective representation. Tallahassee belongs to Florida citizens not Florida members of the Business Roundtable. Wake up, speak up, stand up your earnings may be next on the chopping block.

We don't know the union side of it. What did they offer at the bargaining table and what did the owners offer? People forget history when unions did not exist. Read about it you would be shocked. You must buy at the company store. People work 20 years fired without pensions of any kind. You get injured lose limb thrown to the streets with no recourse no safety improvements. Wages were absymal while owners got mega rich. Wait second sounds familiar today. We don't want workers to have good pay, good health benefits, want fire them for any reason without consquences. Strange that we never learn from our past. Can unions be corrupt? Yes they can, but they also protect their memebers from bad bosses.
