WASHINGTON, D.C. -- Airline JetBlue filed an application with the United States Department of Transportation this week to begin offering non-stop service from the nation's capital to Jacksonville.

The proposed route would run daily between Washington's Ronald Reagan National Airport and Jacksonville International.

According to Jet Blue, their increased presence in Jacksonville would help keep fares competitive.

Currently, only U.S. Airways provides service from Regan National to Jacksonville.

No word yet when the proposed service would commence.

Southwest has also applied for the open slot with proposed nonstop service from HOU - DCA and have begun an aggressive grassroots effort to encourage support for this nonstop service in the Houston community. Jetblue is doing the same. They have posted a blog on their web site here (http://blog.jetblue.com/index.php/2012/12/07/washington-d-c-to-jacksonville-yes-please/) asking Jacksonville residents to send an e-mail to the address in the post, with the information included on the same page. They will then take all of the information, collate it, and provide it to the DOT saying that all of these individuals are in support of the nonstop service from DCA to Jacksonville. The stronger the community show-of-support, the more inclined the DOT may be to approve the nonstop service. Were Jacksonville to get this nonstop service, it would mean two carriers serve DCA from Jacksonville (the other is US Airways), encouraging competition, and most likely, lower fares. This is good for business and leisure travelers alike.
