JACKSONVILLE, Fla.-- Coming out in favor of medical marijuana, some local parents of children with epilepsy call it a matter of life and death.

Parents of Alena Lute, 9, of Jacksonville's Westside, told Action News that her medications are taking a toll on their daughter and they wish they could treat her with marijuana. In states where it's legal, marijuana can be administered in a liquid extract form with low levels of THC.

Trish Lute, Alena's mother, said she would prefer to give marijuana to her daughter than to continue administering a combination of medications her second-grader is currently prescribed. "I'd rather have [marijuana] than the chemical medications she takes on a daily basis," said Lute.

Some doctors are concerned about marijuana's detrimental effect on brain development, especially in young children. Medical marijuana legalization will be a ballot measure for voters to decide in Florida this November.
