GILCHRIST COUNTY, Fla. -- A motorcyclist is in the hospital after crashing while being pursued by police Friday night.

Richard Romero, 46, from Miami, was being chased by the Gilchrist County Sheriff's Office on the Florida Greenway Trail around 10:30pm.

A marked Trenton Police patrol car was stopped on the Greenway facing the opposite direction with the emergency lights activated.

Romero passed the police car on the left and hit the right side mirror with his motorcycle.

According to the Florida Highway Patrol, Romero kept driving but shortly after hit a wood fence on the right shoulder.

The motorcycle spun out, ejecting the driver.

The Gilchrist County Sheriff's Officer chasing behind Romero did not have time to stop, hitting both him and his motorcycle.

Romero was transported to Shands Gainesville in serious condition.

Charges are being filed against him by both the Gilchrist County Sheriff's Office and the Trenton Police Department.  At this point they have not released why Romero was being chased to begin with.
