JACKSONVILLE, Fla. -- Police officers will be wearing purple all month, to raise awareness about domestic violence.

October is domestic violence awareness month.

Just this year, there have been 10 domestic violence-related homicides in Jacksonville.

Authorities believe raising awareness about the problem could reduce that number.

"We're doing the best we can to save lives," said Ellen Siler, the CEO of Hubbard House. "But most of the people who've been killed in the last 15 years in Jacksonville there was never a police report, there was never a call to the shelter. So we did not have an opportunity to intervene."

Siler says if you live in violence, make the call. The 24-hour emergency hotline is (904) 354-3114, or 911 for the police.
