Jacksonville, Fla.-- A local organization needs your help to make the roadways safer for cyclists and pedestrians.
Scott Campbell knows the dangers every time he steps on the peddle. "There have been serious accidents, some friends." said Campbell. He rides every day, but says the dangers are getting worse.
"It's tricky you have to be careful."That's why the North Florida Transportation Planning Organization wants to try and make the roadways safer. Right now, they're asking for input on where the dangers for cyclists and walkers lie.
"Individuals saying what needs improvement and such and such intersection or corridor," said Marci Larson with TPO.
Action News did some digging and found there were 127 fatal accidents in the 4 Northeast Florida counties between 2010 and 2012. Those numbers made Jacksonville the 3rd most dangerous city in the United States for bicyclists and pedestrians in a 2011 study.
This new study to make the streets safer is costing 125 thousand dollars. "It's been addressed before, but never followed through on it," said Campbell. We asked TPO what makes this one different. "It's regional and we're building information on what the counties have done previously," said Larson.
The survey will end at the end of the month. A spokesperson with TPO says we shouldn't expect to see any changes immediately. It could take at least 2 more years.
