The shooting happened near Florida Avenue and Fern Street.  Police responded to the scene just after midnight following a report of gunshots.

Witnesses told police they heard at least eight shots by more than one gun.

Police found the body of 22-year-old Ricky Harper, of St. Augustine, at the scene of the gunfire.

Detectives questioned William Session, 26, of Palatka, as a person of interest in the shooting.

He told police that two men with guns and masks approached him as he left his home on Florida Avenue.

Session said the men started shooting at him as he ran off.

He told police he fired back.  Session identified Harper as one of the men who tried to rob him but didn't know his name.
