JACKSONVILLE, Fla. -- Personal information for 47,000 potential teachers was accidentally made public, according to the Florida Department of Education.
The Florida DOE said information was leaked during a file transfer in late May. FSU's Florida Center for Interactive Media forgot to enact security measures to keep information private when doing the transfer. Personal information was made public for two weeks.
The department reports, there is no indication that information was used for anything inappropriate.
Both FSU and the Department of Education are trying to notify everyone affected. There are also steps that can be taken to make sure information stays protected while the incident is under investigation.
The department will have staff available Monday to assist anyone who might have been impacted. People are asked to call 866-507-1109. The cost of ID protection will be provided.
If participants suspect their Social Security number or other personal information may have been misused or that they may be victim to identity theft, they should contact the FTC at www.ftc.gov/idtheft
or call 1-888-438-4338.
The Department of Education also encourages individuals to place a free fraud alert on their credit files. Fraud alert notifies creditors to contact the account holder before opening new accounts in their name. Fraud alerts can be placed on accounts by calling any of the numbers below.
