Sailors give USS Underwood one final salute

MAYPORT, Fla. -- Past and current crew members gathered at Naval Station Mayport Friday morning to bid farewell to the USS Underwood.

The ship is being decommissioned after calling Mayport home for 30 years.

The USS Underwood played a key role in the recovery efforts following the explosion of the Space Shuttle Challenger.

The guided missile frigate also helped bring water, food and medical relief to Haiti in the aftermath of the earthquake in January 2010.

Mayor Alvin Brown was the guest speaker at the decommissioning ceremony.
