JACKSONVILLE, Fla. - After months of planning and fundraising several of Duval County Sports have been saved.
The public schools system cut several sports to help close a budget deficit. That forced students, coaches, and teachers to look for ways to pay for those extra-curricular activities out of their own pockets.
Wednesday, the Save Our Sports group announced that enough money has been raised to save tennis, golf, cross-country and middle school football. Local businesses like 1st Place Sports and the Jacksonville Sharks helped raise $280,000.
Sports that still need help are slow-pitch softball, wrestling, lacross and boys junior varsity soccer. Officials say those sports need another $45,000. The hope is to have the funds raised by October.
