TALLAHASSEE, Fla. - Officials are warning Florida beachgoers that there may be dangerous rip currents and extreme heat this Labor Day weekend.
Florida Division of Emergency Management officials said increased wind and waves are contributing to a higher risk of rip currents along Florida's Gulf Coast this weekend. This week, an increased threat of rip current is also expected on Florida's east coast.
Hot temperatures and high humidity could also lead to heat indexes of more than 100 degrees this weekend.
A heat advisory was issued for the Florida Big Bend on Friday, where the heat index was expected to reach as high as 105 to 108 degrees. Officials cautioned beachgoers to remain alert when red flags are flying.
