ST. AUGUSTINE, Fla. --Funeral arrangements are being made for a St. Augustine teen who was killed in a motorcycle accident on Sunday.

16-year-old Mark Ochkie Jr. was traveling northbound on Hefferon Drive in St. Augustine when he lost control of his Kawasaki Ninja motorcycle just before 5:00 P.M.

According to the Florida Highway Patrol, Ochkie's bike went into the median and hit a palm tree. He was wearing a helmet.

A small memorial was set up near the tree Monday with flowers and a school picture. Friends left notes saying how much he would be missed and how important he was to them.

John Batta, who says he taught Ochkie's freshman English class, was shocked to learn of the loss.  "You couldn't ask for a better kid. He always came into class with a good attitude and a handshake. The whole community will feel this loss."  Batta says Ochkie would have been a junior at St. Augustine High School this fall.

His father, Mark Ochkie Sr., is a Sargent with the St. Johns County Sheriffs Office. A department spokesman tells Action News he has served the community for close to 20 years.

Arrangements have not been confirmed at this time.

All my Prayers to his family and friends. I absolutely think every young rider needs to take extensive riding tests before they get on the open road...it is so dangerous even for old experienced riders.

Back in the day I wanted a TR250 & saved up enough for a down payment. Fortunately my mother would not co-sign for it but would for a used VW. Went through a string of VW's including one that I totalled on a telephone pole. Thanks, Mom!

that ain't a motorcycle,, it's a " rice rocket "!!! and they call them that because they go from 0- 180 m.p.h.,, in 4.6 seconds !!! what's a kid of 16 doing with that much power under him ??? as often happens,, it was a recipe for disaster with these rice rockets !!! sorry for the familie's loss,,, yet this kid never should have been on that much power in the 1st place !!!
