GAINESVILLE, Fla. -- Weeks of delays and problems with the installation of a temporary holiday ice skating rink have led to the project’s cancellation.
The rink was scheduled to open in Gainesville’s Bo Diddley Community Plaza the day after Thanksgiving.
"Midwest Display, Inc., which was providing and managing the ice rink, ran into numerous challenges and the vendor said he is regrettably forced to cancel the engagement," Russell Etling, with the City of Gainesville, told Action News.
Mike Howard of Midwest Display, Inc. expressed deep disappointment that the firm could not bring Gainesville’s residents and visitors the holiday skating experience everyone was looking forward to.
The City of Gainesville Department of Parks, Recreation and Cultural Affairs is still planning to ring in the New Year in a big way with the popular "Downtown Countdown" concert on Monday, Dec. 31, starting at 9 p.m. at the Bo Diddley Community Plaza.
