My mom would make sure we got an early start the night before, laying out our *special* first day of school outfits that we got to pick *ourselves, (as long as they made senseJ.

We had backpacks loaded and ready to go at the front door. Our morning breakfast was already decided.

Before bed there was a loooonnnng prayer my mother would say for a good school year.

Mostly, about my brother staying focused - and out of mischief-but I remember waking up once and saying, Mama are you really STILL praying?! I think I was 9.

One of my fondest memories was getting a new lunch box to take on the first day.

For me, it was the new King Kong lunch box.

I couldn't wait to show it off to all my friends!
Lynnsey Gardner

My sister, Lauren, and I were raised more like twin sisters because we were so close in age (only 13 months apart!). This first day of school photo captured Lauren and I getting ready to head off to Inverness Elementary in Birmingham, AL.

I was starting first grade and Lauren was beginning Kindergarten. The transition wasn't easy for Lauren; on top of that, there were several other students named Lauren and Laura in her class and she was often confused for other children.

One day, she was so upset over being called the wrong name, the usually quiet child yelled back her correct name to her teacher. As with those lovely little kid behavior modifiers, she moved from the green light to the red light.

Later, she went to take the classroom's milk money and never returned…instead, she knocked on Lynnsey's classroom door in tears over moving her clothespin. In all of our other first days of school (preschool) we had been nearby one another so when she got upset, she came looking for me again.

As I was trying to comfort her, I heard her whole class in the hallway calling her name as the teacher was trying to find her.

The next year, we moved to Grayson, GA and began school in a new state. On the first day of school, we ran into each other in the hallway and stopped to talk, but this time Lynnsey had to move her "mouse" clothespin as discipline for talking in the hall - even if it was her own sister!

We've never stopped being close…luckily in adulthood there's no punishment for talking or relying on each other during the hard days.

I used to walk to school...10 miles...uphill...both ways...in the snow...barefoot.

Seriously...I did walk to school.

And I remember wanting to ride the bus.

But looking back, I'm glad I walked to school. I enjoyed nature.

It was probably part of my developing interest in meteorology.

Here’s a shot of me in my FAVORITE back to school outfit.

I literally thought I was the COOLEST kid on the block with this skirt/belt combo.

I mean, come on - I had my name written in puffy paint on it!

Haha I believe I was 6 here.
