Needy Children Embark on a Special Camp Adventure

On Monday, July 15th, approximately 50 children from local low-income families boarded a bus, pillow and swimsuit in tow, and traveled to Camp Keystone, The Salvation Army’s sprawling 200-acre camp facility in Keystone Heights, FL.  For many of these children, it will be the first time they have traveled outside of Jacksonville.

The campers, ages seven to twelve, will spend five days immersed in a variety of activities, including kayaking on Lake Bedford, swimming, archery, horseback riding, bible devotions, and arts and crafts.   The Salvation Army conducts the camp annually to provide children in struggling families with an opportunity to “just be kids”.

Although a session at the camp is valued at around $200, there is no cost to the children’s families, who must qualify according to federal poverty guidelines.   The camp’s cost is financed through private donations to The Salvation Army.
