Cold!... Hail!

For the first time in 3 years -- since Jan., 2011 -- JIA will likely have 4 straight nights at or below freezing.  Not until Sat. night/early Sun. are we likely to stay above freezing.  The peak of the cold will be early Thu. when there will be a widespread freeze -- a hard freeze near/west of I-95....a light to moderate freeze near the intracoastal & beaches.  Current temps. are shown below followed by the forecast lows for early Thu.
Another cold front Thu. night will reinforce the cold air for Fri. with yet another strong cold front Mon. night.

There will not be much, if any rain with the next couple of fronts but Tuesday's cold front triggering intense t'storm development.  The fast-moving cells rolled east at 40 mph dumping heavy rain, producing gusty winds & dropped a good deal of hail.  The First Alert Doppler radar image below is from a little before 2:30pm & shows a plume of smoke spreading east into N. Duval Co. from a controlled burn in Baker Co.  At the same time, the first t'storms were developing to the immediate west.
The second image is from Action News videographer Joel Lotz & shows the "billowing" cumulonimbus cloud moving into the Southside of Jax producing a lot of hail.  The third image shows how hail develops.  Rain drops are drawn up into the storm cloud by strong updrafts.... the drops freeze & begin to fall before updrafts take the stone back up into the atmosphere where another layer of ice is formed.  This process continues until the hail is large enough to overcome the updraft & then falls to the ground.  One can literally slice a piece of hail & see the onion-like layers indicative of how many times the stone went back up in the updraft of the storm.
