Our crisp/cool autumn weather has arrived! The weather pattern is pretty cut & dry through the weekend with the only fly in the ointment, some occasional high & mid level cloud cover -- especially later in the weekend. Otherwise, lows will be in the 40s inland....50s near & just down wind from the St. Johns River with highs in the low to mid 70s.

Warming commences early next week, & we're back to 80 degrees by the middle of next week. No rain of consequence until at least late next week.

This strong cold front has brought the first snow -- some of it measurable -- to much of the Northern U.S. The photo below is from a friend of one of our Action News' producers in Cedar Rapids, Ia.

Speaking of snow & the upcoming winter....have you noticed oak trees that are dropping lots of acorns? Perhaps you've been conked on the head by one an acorn(!). This phenomenon is known as "masting" & might have been helped out -- to a small degreee -- by the wet spring & summer. There is a myth out there that masting is an indication of a hard winter ahead. But actually it appears masting occurs naturally every few years & the reason is not really known. I found some good info. in "Nature Notes" - click ** here **.

Staying in the spirit of the season....thinking about doing some leaf "peaking"? Of course, what fall foliage color we get locally isn't usually noticeable until Dec. Click ** here ** for some good fall foliage info. from the U.S. Forest Service including a video "Why Do Leaves Change Color!".
