A nice end to the week with afternoon highs Fri. well into the 60s - a pleasant Dec. day.

The focus of the First Alert Forecast continues to be a weekend storm. Low pressure will move from the Gulf Coast northeast to near & north of Atlanta to east of Washington D.C. While not an overly intense storm, the system will be strong enough to drop widespread moderate to locally heavy rain over Fl. & much of the Southeast U.S. & a swath of ice & snow to the north & west of the low pressure area from Missouri to New England.

For the First Coast:

-- partly cloudy, breezy & very mild Sat. with a few isolated showers but long parts of the day dry.

-- Rain will spread from west to east Sat. night through the first half of Sunday. Coverage will be 100% with amounts averaging a half inch to an inch.

-- Rain will diminish from northwest to southeast from late morning through early afternoon Sunday. It will be very close on whether or not there is rain for the Jags' kickoff. It appears the back edge of the rain will be very near Jax by 1pm. In any case....the general weather should gradually improve through the game with a brightening of skies & temps. in the 60s.

Lots of people will be "hitting the highway" the next several weeks. From Rain-X:

1. Use a high quality glass cleaner and window treatment to improve wet weather driving visibility on your windshield and glass.

2. Change your wiper blades every 6-12 months so that they make proper contact with the windshield surface. Old blades can begin to squeak, chatter, skip, smear or streak reducing driving visibility.

3. Use a superior windshield wiper fluid and/or de-icer fluid with a streak-free formula for advanced cleaning power. The blue low quality wiper fluid can cause wiper blades to crack or break and does not protect against streaking.

4. Apply an anti-fog glass treatment to avoid unwanted fog that might appear on the exterior and interior of your car to avoid impair visibility.

The "Santa Run" is Sat. morning in St. Augustine: a little breezy but rather mild for this time of year under partly cloudy skies.

The Second Annual Santa Suits on the Loose 5K is a walk/jog/run benefiting St. Augustine Youth Services, a local therapeutic home for boys.  The race will be held on December 14, 2013 starting at the St. Augustine Beach Pier Park at 8am.  Registration begins at 6:30am.  Entry fee is $35 per person. Sign up early to receive a Santa Suit, guaranteed to the first 300 adult registrants.  Children will receive a Santa-inspired T-shirt.  For more information or to register online, visit ** here **.

"Boiling" solar atmosphere.....from NASA:

This movie shows a numerical simulation of a small area of the solar atmosphere at ~10,000K. Numerical models bridge the gap between IRIS observations and the physical mechanisms driving solar events and dynamics. By examining the similarities and differences between our models and the IRIS observations, we learn about the physics of the solar atmosphere.
