Widespread rain for the First Coast Wed. followed by cold temps. otherwise the big winter storm had relatively minor impacts on the local area.
It's been an interesting winter storm with heavy ice accumulations over Eastern Georgia & much of the Carolina's along with heavy snow. On the leading edge of the push of warm, humid northward early Thu., snowfall rates in & around NYC were 3-6" per hour with huge flakes! Then in the evening, as the low "bombed" out" near the coast, heavy thunderstorms dumped nearly an inch of rain on LaGuardia in less than a hour. Rain will change back to snow before ending early Fri. with winds of 20-35 mph & gusts to 50 mph.
CNN anchor Ashleigh Banfield hammered away at NC Governor McCrory during a noon hour interview Thu. After exaggerating the conditions in NYC & clearly not understanding the storm, the over-the-top-always-pointing-fingers anchor piled it on the NC governor accusing him & the state of not being prepared for the storm. To the governor's credit, he kept his cool but clearly the very excited anchor was going to interrogate as long as she could. She, of course, used Atlanta's debacle from a couple of weeks ago as the "research" for her interview. Once again....meteorologists should be credited
for excellent advance warning on this storm with winter storm watches issued as early Saturday. If people became "stuck", it was due to their own ignorance or arrogance, depending on the individual. Click ** here
** for the transcript. The in-your-face-opinionated anchor then went on to scold the superintendent of NYC schools for not calling off school even though it had started to rain. Furthermore, there was concern that some kids only get fed if they are in school. Props to the school district & so much for "just the facts" journalism - "yellow journalism" is the old term.
Back to the weather.... another storm will follow over the weekend. Though not as intense, there's the potential for more significant snow right along the coast. This same storm will bring a few showers to the First Coast early Sat. then a cool day (though pretty decent).
Photos below from the storm are from Krissie (parents in Virginia).... Leslie Coursey's brother in Connecticut... Arielle Nixon's parents in suburban Atlanta... Derrick Odom's cousin in S. Carolina.
Ready for a warm-up??!! Check out the forecast through Fri. A very nice Sun. afternoon then a big warm-up by Mon. that will continue through midweek. However, onshore winds will keep beaches cooler & enhance the potential for overnight/early morning fog.
So Floridians loved this stat Thu.: Florida was the only U.S. state -- including the mountains of Hawaii -- with no snow cover.
An indication of the severeity of this year's winter: Lake Superior is nearly frozen over -- read ** here **.
