Clark Howard: Bargain shopping
JACKSONVILLE, Fla. -- My son loves to go to yard sales. We were at one this past weekend and I'm trying to explain to him it's the last hour of the sale that the prices don't matter.
You negotiate, you bargain. At 7 years old, he thinks the $2 price tag is fine. I tell him to bargain.
The woman running the garage sale said, "That's right. What do you want to offer me for these?" and he's like a deer in headlights. But a lot of Americans are like deer in headlights when it comes to bargaining, even though a Consumer Reports survey finds 89 percent of people who bargain find it gets them a lower price.
Here's a stunner, the more money somebody makes, the more they're likely to strike a deal on something. So when the sticker is the sticker, do you just pay it or do you negotiate?
Some people are made uncomfortable by it, women made more uncomfortable typically than men. Just remember it's your money.
