Clark Howard: Cellphone upgrades
JACKSONVILLE, Fla. -- There's a big shift going on in the cellphone market where the formally all contract carriers, Verizon and AT&T, responding to the pressure from T-Mobile what has what they call the un-carrier, the non-contract carrier.
Now all three are offering plans for people to have the latest greatest cellphone gadget to be able to upgrade almost continuously. It's like the second you learn how to use features on your smartphone, you're able to dump it and go get another one.
But are these new plans a good deal? Not especially. I mean, if you are really, really, really into getting the latest, greatest smartphone, something I'm guilty of, it's kind of like how people get new cars all the time.
You're not going to be shackled by a contract any more, but you're still going to pay big money every time you want to upgrade to that new smartphone. The best thing to do is go with a non-contract carrier and buy your cellphones over the Internet, like on eBay.
