Clark Howard: Concierge medicine
JACKSONVILLE, Fla. -- The way we buy medicine is going through a dramatic shift. A lot of doctors who do primary care serve as a patient's first point of contact doctor. A lot of them are very disillusioned with the way medicine is going now. They feel like they never get enough time with patients based on how they get reimbursed.
So more and more doctors are now practicing what is known as concierge medicine. It comes in all different shapes and sizes, but in a typical model, you pay a fee to a doctor over the course of a year, either a monthly fee or an annual fee to see you. It used to be just for rich people who would pay as much as a couple of grand a year to a doctor just to be their patient.
Now there are different levels of this where you end up saving money on everyday tests and treatments and things like that in return for paying a doctor a monthly or annual fee. It believe it or not could save you money and get you more personal attention.
