JACKSONVILLE, Fla. -- Have you looked at your credit report recently? You know most of us don't look at our credit report until we get turned down for a loan or something.
So here's what I'd like you to do. I want you to go to annualcreditreport.com, where you are allowed to once each year get a free copy of each of your major bureau credit reports. So you get the report, you look through it and guess what?
You have a good shot that you're going to find errors on the report. So then what do you do? Well, you don't just electronically file a dispute about the item.
Let's say a retailer or credit card company or something like that put something on the report about you that's not true. What you do is send a certified letter to the credit bureau with the dispute form that you can print out with your report. And you contact whoever the credit grantor was who said the bad stuff about you at the same time.
You stay on them and you follow up, because it's not easy to get errors fixed on your credit report. And if you don't get them fixed, they can fix you with higher rates and no loans.
