JACKSONVILLE, Fla. -- After all the terrible publicity the cruise industry has gotten, particularly Carnival cruise lines, with one mishap after another including last year's tragic occurrence in Italy that cost the lives of thirty something people.

There's been a push for the cruise industry to actually lay out what would be a cruise passenger bill of rights.

In fact a New York senator has called for the adoption of such.

You may not know this, but there are almost no laws the cruise industry has to live up to.

Since most cruise ships in Panama or Liberia fly under foreign flags of convenience, the idea is that these countries have made it very, very friendly for the cruise industry with essentially no regulation at all.

So for you, here's the thing, you go on a cruise, you've got to know it's only their promises, they don't have to carry them out.

How do you protect yourself?

Follow the reputation of cruise lines.

Watch what people are saying on cruisecritic.com before you book your next cruise.

You can go to my website to learn more about the cruise passengers bill of rights.
