Clark Howard: Expensive pets
JACKSONVILLE, Fla. -- Nearly two-thirds of us have a household pet, and the medical care we provide to a pet is
completely different than what it was even 10 years ago.
Today, many procedures that you think of, specifically reserved for humans, like exotic cancer treatments, now people are doing for their household pets.
These treatments, as you might expect, are really expensive. So a lot of people have been tempted to buy pet insurance as a way to defray the cost.
I don't recommend pet insurance because the payoff from it over the years really doesn't save you enough money, if at all to make it worth the premiums.
You know what helps more than anything else? If you have a dog or cat that needs an expensive procedure, shopping around for that procedure is what pays.
Veterinary medicine is hyper competitive and calling around and getting price quotes will make a big difference in your total bill.
