Clark Howard: IRS scam
JACKSONVILLE, Fla. -- The IRS reports that people are getting phone calls at their home or on their cellphone, even at their businesses if they own their own business. The caller ID says "IRS."
The individual at the other end of the line sounds like an IRS collection agent.
The individual is very threatening and intimidates people into paying money right then and there-- supposedly to the IRS.
They're given wiring instructions to wire money. They're told to go buy money orders.
Let me tell you something. The IRS does not call you and threaten you in all kinds of ways and tell you to pay up right then and there on the phone.
If you get a call like that, what they need to hear from you is Mr. Buzz. You know what that is? That's a dial tone as you slam down your phone. Don't let anybody steal from you.
