Clark Howard: Made in America
JACKSONVILLE, Fla. -- We've gotten used to people telling us that all the stuff we buy is made in China or somewhere overseas, because nobody can afford to manufacture in the United States anymore. Is that really true? Well let me tell you, it's not.
The United States is manufacturing at all-time record amounts. The jobs in manufacturing aren't as great as they used to be, because of automation. But the very robots going into factories are making it possible for American made stuff to be priced competitive with stuff overseas. I want to give you an example. The new iPhone is made in China. But the new Moto X, Google's new smartphone, is made in the United States. What does it cost to make it in the United States versus making an iPhone? $4 more. That's right. Only $4 more to make it in the good old U.S.A. versus making across the Pacific Ocean in China. More and more, we in the United States can buy made in America and still get a deal.
