Clark Howard: Reedeming airline miles
JACKSONVILLE, Fla. -- More airlines want you to rack up miles on the ground, and not in the air when redeeming them for a free flight. Consumer Advisor Clark Howard says two local airlines rated near the top and bottom for redeeming airline miles.
You get all the pitches about earning frequent flyer miles. Today, most miles are earned in airline programs, not actually in the air, but on the ground using a credit card that ties in. Or, you can earn points at hotels that can be used for airline miles.
There are even bank programs you can earn frequent flyer miles for taking out a mortgage with a particular bank.
A new survey finds that if you fly on Southwest Airlines to accumulate miles on Southwest or on Jet Blue, you have a very easy time redeeming miles.
At the other end of the equation, U.S. Air and Delta by far are the hardest for you to redeem miles with roughly a one and three chance for the trip you want to take. Speaking of Jet Blue, not only are they easy to redeem frequent flyer miles on, but J.D. Power just rated them as the best airline in America as far as customer service.
