Clark Howard: Vacation rental scam
JACKSONVILLE, Fla. -- If you are taking a vacation, especially in the fall, that is true bargain season. Now through mid-December except around Thanksgiving, great deals are available on vacation rentals.
More and more, instead of people staying in a hotel, they're renting from someone on websites like Airbnb, VRBO,or Homeaway. These are websites where legitimately listed places are for rent.
But I need to warn you about a fast-growing scam that popped up big time this summer. Here's what happens -- a criminal captures the full listing from Airbnb or VRBO, and then posts it on Craigslist.
You think you're renting just the greatest place in the world. You pay the deposit to the criminal. You show up at the place and you don't have a rental.
Be careful. Stay away from Craigslist for rentals for your vacation.
