The Jacksonville Jaguars signed second-year linebacker Greg Jones to a contract and released wide receiver Anthony Armstrong, the club announced today.
Jones, 6-0, 248, was a sixth-round draft pick of the New York Giants in 2011. He played in all 16 regular season games as a rookie with five starts, and played in all four postseason games. He was waived during final cuts on August 31. Jones finished with 25 tackles (22 solo) and six special teams tackles in 2011. In the postseason, he produced a team-high seven special teams tackles. He was the only Giants rookie to start the season-opener and was the first Giants rookie linebacker to start on opening day since Hall of Famer Lawrence Taylor in 1981.
A native of Cincinnati, Ohio, Jones played in 52 games with 46 starts at Michigan State where he registered 465 tackles (236 solo), 16.5 sacks, 46.5 tackles for loss and five forced fumbles. He was one of 10 players to earn unanimous first-team All-America honors as a senior, leading the team with 106 tackles.
