JACKSONVILLE, Fla. –  “I have more grown ups to talk to me when I need help.”

Robert’s life now, compared to a couple of years ago—is like night and day.

His 10th birthday should've been a day of celebration.  Instead his world started spinning out of control, fueled by his mother's drug addiction.

“I got home from school and noticed cops were there. I didn't know why.”

The courts tried to keep Robert and his brothers with relatives, but it never seemed to work out.  After he was put into the system, his mother never resurfaced.

“Her rights got terminated,” Robert said.  “I hope she gets on the right track.”

Pretty understanding for a 16-year-old left to fend for himself.

Robert tells me he loves his mother and wants the best for her, but he understands she’s not capable of raising him.

He needs a safe, nurturing environment.  Right now, that's a group home for other Jacksonville teens in the same situation.

Robert tells me he thinks he’d fit well into a family.  He loves to play video games and really let loose on a trip to Adventure Landing.

While the group home has been a safe place -- Robert is ready for the next phase of his life.

He wants to take his place with a family—and says what he really wants is a dad and brothers to bond with.

“I'd like to go fishing and dirt bikes.”
