Every time you purchase something whether it is a new TV, car or even a house, it seems like they always want you to buy some type of extended warranty as well.  My advice to you is DO IT!  Over the weekend, my jeep had started making some odd noises so off to the dealership we went.  I found out that my alternator and a belt had given up and needed to be replaced.  This could have cost a lot of money but thankfully, when we first purchased the jeep, we decided to purchase an additional warranty through the dealership.  The cost to repair would only be the $100 co-pay!  Home warranties are also extremely helpful.  Several months ago, right when it started to get hot, of course, we noticed that the central air unit was not blowing cold air.  We placed a call to the home warranty company we are with and they assigned a contractor to come out to the house.  Twenty-four hours later, we had a tech at the house who fixed the system and we only had to pay a $60 co-pay for something that would have cost us almost $1000.  There are times that go by where I think, “Well maybe I should cancel the home warranty and save myself a few hundred dollars a year,” but that is always when something major happens; the AC fails, we have plumbing issue, the garage door breaks.  It is always something!  Yes, you will have to pay out the money and you may have a year that you don’t need to call on your warranty for anything, but, believe me, you will be so thankful you have it when something major breaks!  I can personally testify that warranties are worth the investment!  Just shop around and do your homework to find the one that best suits your needs.  Also, make sure you go with reputable companies and check out online reviews about them!
