Jacksonville, Fla. - When we walked inside Pepper's Mexican Grill & Cantina and asked to speak to the manager about the recent health inspection... we were told by a worker at the bar, "It's his day off." We explained that according to the State of Florida - there must be a certified food manager on duty at all times. We asked, "So, who's in charge right now?" He told us he would go to the kitchen and check.

The inspector recently found 25 violations at Pepper's including 19 critical:
OLD FOOD STUCK TO CLEAN DISHWARE
THE DISHWASHER NOT SANITIZING CORRECTLY
THE EMPLOYEE HANDWASH SINK BEING USED AS A DUMP SINK.

You can see the full health inspection report for Pepper's by clicking HERE

When the worker came back from the kitchen he told us the owner was out, the manager had the day off and to come back tomorrow. We told him that there should be a manager on duty who could speak to us. That's when he told us, "the servers" were in charge of the restaurant. "Alright, I'm going to get on the phone and call the State of Florida and I'm going to ask them about this. In the meantime can you get me your owners phone number? That would be great!"

The owner told us over the phone that his cook was in charge and had a certificate to be the manager on duty. When we asked to see that certificate he threatened to call the police and asked us to leave.

Right after our visit, the state sent an inspector to check out the owner's story. Here is a copy of the email we received from the state:

Tera,

Upon our arrival, there was no food manager on site, but we called one and they arrived shortly after. They were cited for violation 53-09-1 (No CFM on duty with four or more employees present) and it was corrected on site.
Thanks and have a great day!

If I owned the restaurant, I'd have thrown you out on your ear. Reporting news is one thing. Being belligerent and demanding owners bow to you is not news reporting. That's harassment. Your news organization isn't a governmental oversight agency. You don't have authority to demand business owners comply with your wishes. I'm going to show up with my cameras at FOX-30 and demand to see the station manager so I can ask why you don't report REAL news like how our representatives are voting in Washington and Tallahassee, how they are squandering billions of dollars, and how they are selling us out down the river and NOT representing the welfare of average American families instead of the drivel about the weather you spend 3/4 of your airtime on. Are you going to come out and have a civil conversation with me on camera and let me take that film and edit it any way I want to spin it to the world, or are you going to call the police? Shame on you hypocrites. I don't own a restaurant, but I wish I did just so I could throw Tera out. Tera Barz is an unprofessional over paid yellow journalist moron. I turn off the news every time she is on.

On camera, the owner or manager should be the one under fire, not the workers. The way Tara came across to this bartender was so unfair to him especially when he identified himself, she could have handled this more professionally.

If you don't care if you eat at a dirty restaurant you might as well dumpster dive for dinner. Come on people. Your not supposed to get a warning when your getting inspected. This isn't anything new. To clean a kitchen is one thing to keep it clean is another! Tara has my vote!

If a restaurant is clean and proper then they wont be so threatened by Tara unless you have something to HIDE! Customers want to know its safe where they dine so, do your homework and clean up your act if you want business! All these comments mad at Tara must be the dirty restaurants she found. Bad PR move!

I googled Tera Barz only after seeing the "upcoming news" clip because I was so disgusted by the way she handled herself. It's the exact reason I do not watch the news. The poor performance by the restaurant is unnacceptable, hands down. The issue here, for me, is the way this woman went about doing her "journalism." This employee was a deer in headlights and did not deserve to be accosted by Tera Barz. And the hilarious thing is the fact that they used this as the "upcoming news" clip to reel in the audience. Real classy, let me tell you. It's a shame. Just like Fox runs a special on Mark Brunell's bankruptcy. Who's business is it? Jacksonville local news is a joke, I'm sorry. Oh and Tera, you're one tough cookie, you proved that...

Although I am thankful for health inspectors and reporters like Tara Barz, I do feel it was unfair to put that bartender on the spot on camera at Peppers. It was not his fault and he should not have been exploited like that. It should have been a confronation against the owner of Peppers.

to kngolfer: Chances are if you walked into Channel 47 demanding to see an anchor or manager or anyone else that they would be happy to accomodate you. Only those who aren't abiding with the law have any fear of people asking questions. To call ahead would alert them to get in line with the law just for the inspection when one should already be within the law, that's how they got licensed and how they keep their licenses. Think of feeding the food from this place or other violaters to your child. Makes a difference, don't it.

Stormannorman, We have food inspectors in Florida to do this job, and if there not doing it then ch.47 should get involved, but to just walk into a business like they did and start asking a bunch of questions to the staff or waiters, that is not professional. The very least they should have done was call ahead and schedule a visit when the resturant wasn't so busy. I'm sure this resturant doesn't want any bad publicity and are doing everything they can to clean up there act, and besides ch.47 doesn't have any money tied up in this establishment.
