JACKSONVILLE, Fla. - Everyone has their own go-to place to get sushi.
It's supposed to be fresh, cheap and fast. The Sushi House nestled in a strip mall at the Saint Johns Town Center is known for daily lunch and dinner specials plus their locally inspired rolls like the Baymeadows.
But on September 29th, the restaurant was temporarily shut down by the state health inspector. The inspection report obtained by Action News shows the inspector found approximately eighty live roaches, fifty dead roaches and cigarette butts in the kitchen. We showed up to see the manager just before lunch time.
"Hi. I'm Tera Barz with Action News. We wanted to see if you would show us your kitchen... to show your customers that it's clean."
The Manager asked us to wait while he made a phone call and also told us he didn't speak English. He ended up having another restaurant worker talk to us for him and show us inside the kitchen. On the day we went - the manager had four days since the original inspection to clean it up.
We saw roaches crawling
everywhere. One under the prep table. One on some bags of food under a counter. One smashed on the floor and another one crawling out from the vents in the freezer.
We asked, "What do you want to say to your customers about this?" The worker replied, "We've cleaned."
We were then asked to leave...so they could open for lunch.
Apparently the state inspector thinks they should clean again. After getting complaints of live roaches at the restaurant - the inspector went out again to look around the kitchen. This time he found several more dead roaches. He gave the restaurant twenty-four hours to clean or face further action.
